Career

KL Rahul is a technically orthodox right-hand batter who has been asked to fill more roles than almost any contemporary India player: Test opener, ODI middle-order anchor, T20 opener, wicketkeeper and stand-in captain, often switching between them within a season.

At his best he combines a compact defensive technique with a wide range of scoring shots, and he is one of relatively few Indian batters to have scored Test centuries in England, Australia and South Africa. The variety of assignments has made his output uneven, but it has also made him difficult to replace.

He has captained in the IPL for Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, and kept wicket for India across white-ball formats to allow an additional bowler in the XI.

Highlights

  • Scored Test centuries in England, Australia and South Africa
  • Scored a century on Test debut in Australia in 2014-15
  • Has kept wicket for India in white-ball cricket to balance the side
  • Captained Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL

Overview

What the figures show

KL Rahul's IPL record is one of the long ones — thirteen seasons between 2013 and 2026, 149 innings, 5,815 runs. Ranked by runs, 2020 sits on top with 670 for Punjab Kings. No IPL innings has beaten the 152 scored in 2026. Fifty has been passed 51 times, six of those going on to hundreds. Measured against the 181 batters here who have faced 300 IPL balls or more, 139.2 is quicker than the 135.2 median by 4. Fours and sixes account for roughly 60% of the total — 508 and 239 of them.

The seasons break into six spells: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2013), Sunrisers Hyderabad (2014–2015), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2016), Punjab Kings (2018–2021), Lucknow Super Giants (2022–2024) and Delhi Capitals (2025–2026). Most of the runs, 2,548 of them, came in the Punjab Kings years. There is no IPL cricket on the record in 2017.
