Career
Chris Gayle hit the ball harder, and from a stiller base, than almost anyone who has played the game. He barely moved his feet, judged length exceptionally early and cleared the boundary with a swing that looked unhurried, which made him the defining batter of the first decade of Twenty20 cricket.
He is the only man to have scored a triple century in Tests, a double century in ODIs and a century in T20 internationals, and the only player to hit a T20 double hundred, made for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013. His Test career is often overlooked, but two triple centuries put him in a group of three.
Highlights
- Only batter with a Test triple century, an ODI double century and a T20I hundred
- Scored 175 not out for Royal Challengers Bangalore, the highest score in T20 cricket
- One of only four batters to make two Test triple centuries
- Hit the first ball of a Test match for six
Overview
What the figures show
Chris Gayle's IPL record is one of the long ones — thirteen seasons between 2009 and 2021, 141 innings, 4,965 runs. Ranked by runs, 2012 sits on top with 733 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. No IPL innings has beaten the 175 scored in 2013. Fifty has been passed 37 times, six of those going on to hundreds. Measured against the 181 batters here who have faced 300 IPL balls or more, 149.0 is quicker than the 135.2 median by 13.8. Fours and sixes account for roughly 76% of the total — 404 and 357 of them.
The seasons break into three spells: Kolkata Knight Riders (2009–2010), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2011–2017) and Punjab Kings (2018–2021). Most of the runs, 3,163 of them, came in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru years.
The Big Bash adds 616 runs from 20 matches for Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder, best of 100. The two diverge on pace: 149.0 per hundred balls in the IPL against 137.8 in the Big Bash, a gap of 11.2 the Indian way. The averages read 39.72 and 32.42.
